“Gao Shan,” not a very tall mountain,
is the name of a tribe
Located along Taiwan’s Highway 11, in the coastal mountains, there’s a small group of Bunun indigenous people who migrated from the Central Mountain Range to the coastal mountains. They left their original homeland for cultural enrichment and embarked on a unique life story in these mountains: Living closely with various local indigenous tribes, they’ve become the coastal Bunun people who understand both the mountains and the sea.
The “waisheng uncles” (referring to mainland Chinese immigrants) brought Han Chinese culture from across the strait, and their New Year feasts are familiar flavors to the children here. The True Jesus Church is their steadfast faith, providing essential support during life’s challenges. These Bunun people, living courageously with their Bunun skin color and features by the seaside mountains, are now in their fourth generation. They strive to exist and explore, and we welcome you to get to know them.
Discovering the Coastal Bunun Story
Rich cultural fusion has made “the Coastal Bunun” a cross-boundary community. We are Bunun, Amis, Sakizaya, Kavalan, Hakka, and Minnan people… At the GaoShan Forest Tribal Ranch, we share a collective understanding of adventure, culture, and ecology. Through heart and soul experiences, we connect with the land, express the unique voice of the coastal Bunun, and guide people back to nature and cultural wisdom, allowing them to truly be themselves.
Hi, I’m Xiao Ma
The GaoShan Forest Tribal Ranch is the last migration point for the coastal Bunun tribe. The land is steeped in historical stories, following the ebb and flow of the old tribe’s life. We’ve planned large-scale zoning, from century-old trees and ancient hunting trails to valley water sources, stone cave living, and terraced remnants. The ranch translates the wisdom and culture of hunters into healing experiences, allowing you to see the world through the eyes of animals and be welcomed by a sustainable forest.
Hi, I’m Xi Ge
The GaoShan Forest Tribal Ranch stands on the former site of the Gao Shan tribe, established due to an old hunter’s adventure (Xiao Ma’s grandfather). This place carries the DNA of adventure, transforming stories, landscapes, and experiences into inner emotions that can be taken away. The ranch itself is a celebration; we merely guide everyone inside to experience the healing context.

Forests:
The Best Companions for Locals and Travelers
The costal Bunun people live by the sea, yet they still reside in the mountains traditionally. Farming and hunting in the forest are their familiar ways of life. Each of them has their own little forest, a legacy left by their elders. It’s their secret childhood hideaway, surrounded by mountains and the vast ocean—a treasure trove of abundance. When wanderers return home and step into the forest, they effortlessly shed all stress, becoming carefree once again.
The magic of the forest extends beyond the Bunun people; it’s a home for all living things. The forest on the coastal mountains, from distant past to infinite future, holds all life. We want to share this forest, reconnect people with nature through carefully designed experiences, and allow travelers to rekindle their long-lost connection. Everyone has their own pace and speed, but the forest will always be there. All we need to do is set forth.
